Euro zone: inflation at its highest for 25 years

The euro zone's annual inflation rate reached 5% in December 2021, the highest in 25 years, according to data from the European Union's statistical office, Eurostat. This increase is mainly fueled by soaring energy prices, up 26% year-on-year in December 2021. In France, where the consumer price index rose 2.8% year-on-year in December 2021, an “inflation allowance” of 100 euros is provided for the 38 million French people earning less than 2,000 euros net per month. It was paid in December 2021 to employees in the private sector, the unemployed and the self-employed. Civil servants receive it in January 2022 and retirees on their February 2022 pension.

Real estate credit: 2021, the most dynamic year since 2017
The production of new mortgages amounted to 273 billion euros in 2021, after 252.3 billion euros in 2020 and 246.5 billion euros in 2019, according to statistics communicated by the Banque de France. The year 2021 is thus “the most dynamic year since 2017”, underlines the institution, the growth rate of housing loans reaching 6.4% in 2021, after 5.5% in 2020. This year exceptional situation takes place in a context of very low interest rates, with a low point of 1.12% reached in November 2021 (1.13% in October 2021).

Tax reductions and credits: 5.3 billion euros paid mid-January 2022
Just over 8.7 million households will receive an advance on tax reductions and credits in mid-January 2022, for an average amount of 605 euros per household, indicated the Ministry of Economy, Finance and of the Relaunch. In total, 5.3 billion euros are paid under this advance of 60% of the total amount of the tax reductions and credits concerned, declared in the spring of 2021 for expenditure incurred in 2020. The final amount of the reductions and tax credits for each taxpayer will be calculated in the spring of 2022, based on the declaration of income and expenses incurred in 2021, and regularized in the summer of 2022.

Health mutuals: contributions up 3.4% in 2022
Contributions for mutual insurance companies will increase by an average of 3.4% in 2022, according to a study carried out by Mutualité Française among 32 mutual insurance companies. This increase is linked to an “unprecedented increase in health expenditure” in 2021 with 6% more health services reimbursed by mutuals (+900 million euros). The increase in contributions differs according to the type of contract: +3.2% for individual contracts, +3.8% for compulsory collective contracts and +2.9% for optional collective contracts. Mutual insurance contributions, however, increase less than health insurance expenditure (excluding Covid), forecast to increase by 3.8% for 2022, underlines the Mutualité Française.

Income tax: the scale increased by 1.4% for 2022
The brackets of the income tax scale have been increased by 1.4% by the finance law for 2022 in order to take inflation into account. In 2021, this revaluation was only 0.2%. The first tranche, non-taxable, thus goes up to 10,225 euros. The second tranche, taxed at 11%, ranges from 10,226 euros to 26,070 euros. The third and fourth tranches, taxed at 30% and 41% respectively, range from 26,071 euros to 74,545 euros and from 74,546 euros to 160,335 euros. The last tranche, beyond 160,336 euros, is taxed at 45%.

Housing: France Renov’ centralizes aid for energy renovation
At the start of 2022, the Ministry for Ecological Transition launched a new public service called France Renov’. Composed of a single website, a telephone number and a network of more than 450 counters throughout the territory, France Renov' supports households wishing to carry out energy renovation work in their homes, by delivering “neutral, free and personalized advice”, specifies the Service-public.fr site. Many aids (MaPrimeRénov, MaPrimeRénov Sérénité, zero-rate eco-loan, etc.) are available for the energy renovation of housing, responsible for more than 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in France.
