Entrepreneurship in France, an antidote to the crisis.
Contrary to what many thought, the number of creations in 2020 represents a record year with more than 848,000 new companies registered against 815,000 in 2019, i.e. 35,000 more than had already exceeded all forecasts. The 2021 barometer on the desire for entrepreneurship among French people, produced by OpinionWay, confirms that 2021 should not be outdone with 21% of French people who say they want to create or take over a business. A third of them even claim to have a well-prepared short-term project. It would therefore be nearly 7% of working people who have an entrepreneurial project ready to start within two years.

A desire that still seems relevant
It must be said that the successive confinements have led the French to carry out a new reflection on their future. It is also interesting to note that according to INSEE, the average age of business creators in 2020 was 36 years old and with regard to business takeovers at 45 years old, according to the CRA 2019 National Observatory of the transmission of VSEs/SMEs, data which therefore shows a rejuvenation compared to the 2000s.
The statistics in favor of an increase
According to Insee October 2021 statistics, the total number of business creations for all types of business rebounded sharply (+6.7% after a 1.9% drop in September, Registrations of micro-entrepreneurs are recovering (+ 8.1% after -3.7%) and traditional business creations increased again (+4.4% after +1.4%).In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the last twelve month increased sharply (+21.0%), in particular due to the particularly low level of creations during the first confinement in 2020.
On October 9, 2021, the national survey conducted by Ifop on behalf of the Business Creation Observatory of Bpifrance Création among 5,500 people representative of the French population, the French Entrepreneurial Index (IEF) measured the entrepreneurial dynamism in France. The results of the 2021 edition highlight the fact that the French (30% of French people who participate in the entrepreneurial chain) are not afraid to embark on the entrepreneurial path despite the health context. This survey shows that business creation should not stop.
How is the entrepreneurial chain defined?
The entrepreneurial chain, in 2021, includes intentionists who plan to create or take over an activity, business leaders, but also project leaders who have started the process of creating their business. It is now 3 out of 10 French people, stable figures, very revealing, which show compared to those of 2018 that entrepreneurial momentum is a reality rooted in France. It is all the more significant as it is located in an exceptional context which is that of the health crisis which does not offer a clear sky.
According to Nicolas Dufourcq, CEO of Bpifrance, during the press conference on December 9: "This survey demonstrates that we must collectively extend our action to follow the structural trend of a French population which is resolutely turning towards entrepreneurship. . It is a certainty, there will be more and more entrepreneurs in France and therefore a need for reinforced support to promote the sustainability and growth of these companies, a vector of value creation and the jobs of tomorrow. These challenges are at the heart of Bpifrance's strategy to serve the future. »
Creators who have refined their project
Project leaders represent 11% of the population surveyed, compared to 7% in 2018, which is far from the forecasts that have been repeated over and over. The entrepreneurial dynamic has therefore become more and more part of the way of conceiving the future in France. Contrary to popular belief, project leaders believe that the crisis has boosted them and even reinforced their desire to undertake because due to the confinements, they had more opportunity to refine their project, to think about new opportunities. Conversely, intentionists have become more cautious (9% of French people in 2021 vs 14% in 2016).
More engaged business leaders
Admittedly, three-quarters of business leaders acknowledge having been impacted by the pandemic, but their presence has not diminished since 2018. Instead of being discouraged by circumstances, 1 in 5 business leaders have used the health crisis to reflect on the vision he has of his company, to change his strategy, or to offer new products and services and therefore use them as a springboard or a rebound. It is clear that entrepreneurs are very resilient despite the health context: the proportion of former business leaders who have sold or closed their business (14%) has not increased since 2018.
