This January 23, several agricultural and livestock platforms have called a demonstration in Madrid with the slogan 'For a living rural environment. In defense of family farming and ranching', which aims to defend these sectors as the "base" of the people's economy and warn that this model suffers "great threats".

Protest schedule and route

The demonstration welcomes around 200 rural associations that will meet to ask for "respect and progress" in rural areas. It will start at 11:00 a.m. in the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz in Madrid, in front of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, with the reading of the manifestos and demands, and will end in the Atocha area at around 4:00 p.m.

The protest will travel along the Paseo de la Castellana, the Paseo de Recoletos and the Paseo del Prado until it reaches the Paseo de la Infanta Isabel, next to the Atocha Station.

streets closed to traffic

The Madrid City Council has published on its website the traffic incidents scheduled for this Sunday, January 23, due to the protest.

"Traffic incidents are contemplated on the main roads of the city due to the following demonstration/concentration: Sunday, January 23, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (approximately) incidents and/or outages are planned of traffic in the Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo del Prado and Paseo de la Infanta Isabel", they explain from their website.

For this reason, the Madrid City Council calls on citizens to avoid driving in private vehicles through the areas affected by cuts and/or traffic restrictions.

What does the protest demand?

This Sunday's demonstration is in defense of the rural world under the slogan 'For a living rural world. In defense of agriculture and family farming'. The main objective of the protest is to defend the agricultural and livestock sectors as the "base" of the economy of the towns and also to warn that it is a model that suffers "great threats."

One of the associations that participates in the protest is UPA-UCE Extremadura, which claims a shock plan in the face of the increase in production costs and the "strict" application of the Food Chain Law to guarantee fair prices.

It also calls for a CAP that looks at family agriculture and livestock with more support for rural youth and women, the reduction of electricity rates, an "exhaustive" control of imports and the application of clauses that prevent "unfair" trade relations in the agreements with third countries.

The strengthening of the agricultural insurance system, with changes that make it more universal and accessible, and hydrological plans adapted to the future of the agricultural sector that allow the consolidation, modernization and optimization of irrigation, as well as a fairer distribution among farms, are other of your requests.
